New Vision Pro ad echoes that of the first iPhone

The mixed reality headset will be available next month! But in the United States only, to start.

Apple has just published a new promotional video on its YouTube channel, where we discover previously seen images of its new mixed reality headset: the Vision Pro. But it’s not the latter that caught our eye when we viewed the content…

Indeed, the most observant will notice that the campaign, entitled Get ready , is reminiscent of the one called Hello and which presented the very first iPhone in 2007. We thus discover extracts from very well-known films. About fifteen years earlier, these short passages depicted characters picking up the receiver to make a (ingenious) call. In 2024, they were replaced by an anthology of protagonists showing off their most beautiful frames (glasses, helmet, headband) before the following, similar scene takes place.

As a reminder, Apple has just announced the official release date of the Vision Pro. The device will be available from February 5 in the United States . The deployment schedule for the European market, however, remains unknown to date.

What technical sheet for the Apple Vision Pro?

The Apple Vision Pro will come with an external battery, with a battery life of two hours . “External”, because it is connected to the helmet by a cable, which therefore makes the frame lighter on the neck. In terms of performance, the manufacturer has reserved no less than two proprietary processors for us under the hood. On the one hand the R1, which is dedicated above all to augmented reality and which has so far not been seen anywhere else from the Apple firm. And on the other hand, the M2, already present under the chassis of the eponymous MacBook Air or certain models of MacBook Pro and iPad Pro.

The volume of RAM remains to be defined, for its part. On the other hand, we know the definition of the two screens (one for each eye) which equip the Vision Pro: each panel has a 4K resolution . We have also just learned that specific lenses will be available by prescription for those whose vision requires them, for at least $99. Count on $3,499 for the headset alone, apparently without a protective case .

A revolution, but which questions

If Apple has brought its advertisements for the iPhone and the Vision Pro so close together, it is probably to recall the key ambitions of its new headset. The device does not present itself as a simple device dedicated to video games, unlike many competing products. No, for the manufacturer, it is clearly the precursor which, in the long term, could clearly replace our mobiles or our computers . In any case, this is what rumors suggest, emanating directly from the head office of Tim Cook's company.

We also find within visionOS (the operating system) some of the apps already installed natively on macOS or on iOS, with for example Photos or Mail and Messages. So, of course, for the moment, the Apple Vision Pro still remains too large to present itself as real connected glasses. But Cupertino is also working on smart lenses, which could well and truly supplant our smartphones and tablets with a much less bulky format for everyday use. What do you think ?
